How does Dally end his life?
The police chase him to the empty lot where the greasers hang out. There, Dally takes out his unloaded gun and threatens the police, who shoot him in self-defense. Dally dies with a “look of grim triumph on his face,” and Ponyboy realizes that Dally “wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.”
Tough Guy. Notice the "used to." This is some subtle foreshadowing. Pony no longer sketches Dally because Dally's already dead when Pony's writing. His death is one of his reasons Pony's writing this piece in the first place.
When Johnny dies, Dally bolts out of the room and takes off running. In this chapter, Ponyboy questions his identification with the East Side greasers. As the seriousness of life hits him and he is forced to deal with the issue of mortality, he begins to challenge some long-held beliefs.
What happened in Chapter 8 in The Outsiders? Ponyboy and Two-Bit go to visit Johnny, who is severely wounded from the fall and fire at the hospital. They also see Dally, whose determined to fight in the rumble that night and gets Two-Bit's prized switchblade.
Dally pulls out the unloaded gun he carries, and the police shoot him. Dally collapses to the ground, dead. Ponyboy muses that Dally wanted to die.

Dally's death forces readers to take another serious look at themes that are vital to understanding the novel. One important theme is the evolution of family relationships. In this chapter, Pony is concerned that he may have only called for Soda, not for Darry, while he was sick and barely conscious.
Dally didn't die a hero. He died violent and young and desperate, just like we all knew he'd die someday…But Johnny was right.
6. Who gets sick and passes out after Dally dies? Ponyboy.
The officer believes Dally, and he even escorts them to the hospital. In his daze, Pony hears Dally ramble: he regrets encouraging Johnny to stay out of trouble and not “get hard,” because otherwise he would not have run into the church.
Did Dally save Johnny?
Jerry tells him what happened: Dally knocked Ponyboy out while smothering a fire that had caught on Ponyboy's back. Dally then saved Johnny.

Dally's one arm is severely burned, but he will eventually regain full use of it. Johnny is in critical condition; his back is broken and he is suffering with third-degree burns. If he lives, he will not be able to walk for the rest of his life.
Ponyboy asks Sodapop about Sandy and learns that she got pregnant and moved to Florida. Her parents refused to let her marry Sodapop because of his age, so Sandy left to live with her grandmother.
Dallas asks Two-Bit for his switch-blade, and Two-Bit gives it to him. Dally hides it under his pillow. He plans to get out of the hospital in time for tonight's rumble, which he wants to win.
They finally see Dally being shot to death by a policeman who was unaware of the gun being completely empty. Dallas Winston then dies almost instantly, crumpling under a street light in the park, a look described as that of "grim triumph" on his face, and his gang powerless to save him.
Sylvia is Dally's ex-girlfriend who cheated on him while he was in prison at the beginning of the novel. This was found out when Johnny pointed out that Dally had his ring back. She does not make an appearance in the movie, but she is mentioned by Dally near the beginning.

It is just after he, Johnny, and Dally entered the burning church to rescue the children who had gone inside. Jerry, one of the adults in charge of the children, is telling Ponyboy that Dally came out all right, but that Johnny was badly burned by a falling beam. He goes on to praise the three boys for their heroics.
Who throws a Coke at Dally's face?
Dallas comes back with sodas, and hands one to each girl. Cherry throws it in Dally's face.
After the rest of the Greasers have one final rumble with the Socs, they return to the hospital just before Johnny succumbs to his injuries. Before dying, he tells Ponyboy to "stay gold."
Dally has a badly burned arm, but Johnny is in far worse condition, with a possible broken back and bad burns. They are all considered heroes for saving the children. At the hospital, doctors examine Ponyboy, and except for a few burns and a big bruise across his back, he's fine.
Dally feels anger after Johnny dies. He punches a wall. Then he runs away because he feels as if he did not do enough to try and save him. According to The Outsiders, “"Damnit, Johnny..." he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will.
Ponyboy knows it was an act of suicide. He reflects on both the bad and good in Dally and concludes Dally died recklessly but bravely. Discussion Prompt: What does Ponyboy mean when he says Dally died “gallant”? Do you agree with him?
Johnny shocks Dally by telling him he wants to go back home and confess to his crime. Dally tries to change Johnny's mind, telling him he never wants to see Johnny hardened the way prison would harden him.
"Johnny," Dally said in a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, "Johnny, I ain't mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don't know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny...you get hardened in jail.
According to Ponyboy, Dally died because, “Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). Ponyboy fainted in the vacant lot because of the gash he got on his head during the rumble and the shock of seeing two of his friend die.
After Dally dies, Ponyboy questions if he wants to continue in the life of a greaser and fears that he may not be able to stay with Darry because of the violence that comes with being a greaser.

He walks around in a stupor and denies that Johnny is evven dead. How does Ponyboy react to Johnny's death? Dally is angry and upset and runs out of the hpspital. Johnny was the only person/thing that Dally loved in life, and now he's gone.

Distraught after Johnny's death, Dally has run off to do something desperate. He has robbed a grocery store and called Darry for help, but the police have surrounded him in the vacant lot while the greasers watch at a distance. Dally pulls out a gun that isn't loaded, but is sure to draw the policemen's fire.
Johnny's last words to Ponyboy was, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.” What Johnny meant by this was for Ponyboy to stay the way he was, and not to get influenced by other people.
In The Outsiders, Johnny dies as a result of burns and a spinal injury sustained while rescuing children from the burning church. When the boys return from eating, the church is on fire, and Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy rush in to save the children inside. The roof collapses on Johnny, breaking his back.
