What should I use to draw on canvas?
Two of the most commonly used paints for canvas art are oil and acrylic paint. Acrylic comes in as an all-time favourite with its favourable qualities; it's easy to work with and dries quickly. Oil paint is another winner with its thick, gluey consistency it is the perfect paint recipe paired beautifully with canvas.
Grab a pencil, color pencil, or charcoal and make a sketch on a piece of paper. This is a helpful tip for any painting, but here's the great thing about canvas: You can use a pencil (graphite) to lightly outline your art on the canvas and then paint over it.
One way is to use graphite transfer paper. This is a thin sheet of paper, coated in a fine layer of graphite. You place the paper beneath your drawing and trace over it with a pencil. The graphite will transfer onto the canvas, and you'll be left with a faint outline of your drawing.
Canvas makes a fantastic surface for charcoal drawings. The grain of the canvas allows the charcoal to adhere very well. As you can see here all three types of charcoal that I have used are able to create excellent marks when applied to the canvas.
Once the gesso is dry, after at least an hour you can start painting on it or sketching on it, but it's better if you let it sit overnight.
POSCA paint pens are excellent to use on canvas paintings. Use them for intricate designs, lettering, bold outlines, etc. They are very opaque and water based.
H pencils are a great choice for sketching on canvas if you prefer a harder lead that is less prone to smudging. B pencils or charcoal can be used on canvas if you plan to create your artwork out of this medium and want to take advantage of the tendency of the pencils to smudge in order to do so.
Answer: You can paint on a canvas that has not been gessoed, but it will absorb the paint a lot, making painting a little harder and edges hard to control.
To protect your pencil drawings from smudging, spray them with a fixative. This will create a barrier between the graphite and anything that might come in contact with it. If your drawings are in a sketchbook, you can also put wax paper, frames, or page protectors between the pages.

This translucent waxy paper is one of your best allies when it comes to preserving your graphite drawings. Although parchment paper is the optimal choice—the graphite will keep better in place—you can also put a white sheet of paper on the drawing to protect it.
Should beginners paint on canvas?
Painting with acrylics on canvas is always a sure bet. While you probably will not be able to find 300lb fine art paper at Walmart, you will usually be able to find artist canvas there which is suitable for beginners.
Canvases need to be “primed” before you start painting, which is when you apply a layer of material that creates a smooth barrier between the canvas and paint. Priming makes it easier for the canvas to grip paint, keep the pigments bright, and stay rigid and usable as it gets wet.
Tip 4: Flip Canvas
As you work on the same drawing, your eye gets used to seeing the image one way, but as soon as it's flipped, errors can jump out at you. The more often you flip the canvas, the better, as it helps you to keep working with a fresh eye and avoid hidden mistakes.

What is Gesso? If you are starting out on your painting journey, you may not have heard of gesso. It is a type of white paint that many artists use as a primer (the first layer) on their canvas paintings.
If you don't prime or gesso your canvas it is likely to rot over time when directly in contact with your paint.
However, it may not be as easy to paint over the oil pen with acrylic paint. Sharpies can be used on canvas too!

Acrylic paint markers can be used on paper and canvas, of course, but they also perform well on other surfaces such as glass, wood, and ceramics. You can use them alongside traditional acrylic paint, particularly for highlights, fine lines, and other detail work.
Why do artists paint canvas red first?
Underpainting with red color has many advantages in painting, and especially in oil painting. I always start by painting the canvas in red. Having a red background, especially when you paint with oil, makes it easier and more convenient. The main reason is that you gain a lot of time when painting like that.
Learning the correct way to prime your canvas is a simple but crucial skill for artists working with oil or acrylic paints. Priming seals and protects the support, makes the canvas less absorbent, helps the colours stand out and can provide a smoother surface with enough tooth for the paint to bind onto.
In general, wetting the back of the primed canvas is recommended because it wets the front of the canvas enough to keep acrylic paint wet and workable for longer. The canvas face is not dripping wet but just enough to make acrylic paint blending easier.
You shouldn't use hairspray to fix drawings. It is likely to yellow over time, often quickly. It may also change the appearance of your work, making it appear darker or even dissolving some colours completely. You should seal your drawings with an artist quality fixative spray instead.
The classic way to guard against smudging a drawing is to place a piece of CLEAN paper under your hand whilst you draw. Use plain smooth paper, something like photocopy paper, wax paper, or tracing paper. Avoid creased or heavily textured paper, they don't work.
To keep the drawing from smudging, you can apply a fixative spray or acrylic matte medium with a soft brush over the canvas and let it dry before you begin to paint. Be aware of the fact that if you use a more transparent painting method, pencil lines may show through the paint.
Many artists who create drawings with friable or powdery media, such as chalk, pastel and charcoal, choose to use hairspray as an inexpensive alternative to commercially available art fixatives.

Some artists may suggest using hairspray as a fixative; however this is not recommended for a couple reasons. First, the chemical makeup of hairspray does not ensure archival properties and could cause yellowing of the paper over time. Also, if too much is used, the paper can become sticky.
Beginning a painting with a ground color in place helps speed up the painting process. Having the white canvas all covered from the start somehow makes the painting process less intimidating. Coloring a canvas ensures the painting's mid-tone is established from the start.
Should you always paint a canvas white first?
The answer actually depends on the canvas that you purchase. Most, if not all, canvases that you buy at your typical craft stores are already primed for acrylic painting. If the canvas is a bright white color, it's ready to go!

Stretching canvas print over a frame after painting is possible, but can be challenging. Paint cracks may form during the stretch. This is why it's recommended to stretch ripple free, pre-primed canvas before painting.

A vertical format encourages the eye to move up and down the painting.
The best thing I can suggest is to carefully paint over those charcoal and pencil mistakes with white gesso. You might have to use a small brush so that you don't accidentally gesso over the lines that you want to save. If you have to, you can do 2-3 coats of gesso over the mistakes until they are covered up.

All you need is a soft graphite pencil or stick. Take the graphite and cover the back of the surface of the drawing that you want to transfer. This is called "carboning" the surface. Lay the drawing down on the surface that you to transfer the drawing to and then just trace the image.
