The National Academy, with a weekly commitment in the National Curling Academy (NCA), in The Peak, Stirling.

Those are provided at our headquarters, the National Curling Academy in Stirling, an inspirational facility which was completed in 2017 thanks to more than £3.15m funding from Stirling Council and sportscotland and where on ice training is delivered by our high performance coaching team.

Has the US ever won a curling medal?

To play curling, a set of stones are needed. They are made of a special type of granite and weigh almost 20 kilos each. What many don't realize is that there is a great deal of physical activity involved in curling. The short answer to all of these questions is friction. Curling is named after the unique turning that occurs at the end of the stone's path on the ice. The curling stone, or rock, is made of dense polished granite from Ailsa Craig, Scotland, and in the Olympics, each rock weighs 19.1 kg (44 lbs).

Shoes. Curling shoes come with a sliding plastic surface on one foot, and a grippy rubber surface on the other. Usually we put a rubber "gripper" on the sliding surface so we can walk around safely. You do not need curling shoes to start curling.

Do curlers ever fall?

Over 90% of acute curling injuries resulted from a fall, and 31.7% were head impacts.

As the thrower releases the stone at the hog line, the sweepers can drop their stopwatches (they are usually fastened safely around the player's waist) and can then use this information to help them judge the stone as it travels down the ice.

If a team cannot score two points, they will often attempt to "blank an end" by removing any leftover opposition stones and rolling out; or, if there are no opposition stones, just throwing the stone through the house so that no team scores any points, and the team with the hammer can try again the next end to score ...

Curlers are more likely to slip or fall when stepping on or off the ice. Never stop a rock with your hand. Your fingers can be crushed, especially if the rock hits another rock while you're trying to stop it! Use your broom or brush to stop a rock.

The curling stone's concave bottom, which limits how much it comes into contact with the ice, and the pebbles reduce friction. Essentially, the pebbles melt a bit when the heavy stone runs across them, creating a micro-layer of water upon which the stone can glide.

Part-time or seasonal jobs are often the norm as curlers try to generate as much income as they can away from the ice. “It's hard to have a regular job,” veteran skip Chelsea Carey said. “There are some that still have what would technically be called a full-time job but it's harder and harder.

Curlers have played for cash prizes in what are known as cashspiels dating back to the 1940s, but they have never been taxed on their winnings. The reasoning was that so few of the players actually turned a profit on their prizes that the expenses claimed by the teams would force the government to issue refunds.

Prior to competition season, the American curling team hits the gym six days a week, for two to three hours a day. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are weight-room days (lots of squats, cleans, and deadlifts), while Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are dedicated to cardio.

The difference is more nuanced, according to Kyle Paquette, director of sports science for Curling Canada, suggesting to some that top male curling skips may see angles better and anticipate three or four shots ahead better than their female counterparts.
